Mexican Train Score Sheet (Free Printable)

A Mexican Train dominoes score sheet with one row per round, from the double 12 down to the double blank, for 2 to 8 players with names printed on.

Quick answer: The sheet above prints 13 rounds for a double-12 set, from Double 12 down to Double 0, with a column for each player and a total row. After each round, write the pips left in each player's hand; the lowest total after the last round wins. Choose a double-6, 9 or 15 set for 7, 10 or 16 rounds.

What the sheet prints

The top shows “Mexican Train score sheet”, a date line, your game night name and the set you play, for example “Double-12 set · 13 rounds · lowest total wins”. Each round has its own row labelled with the starting double, so everyone can see which double opens the next round. The total row at the bottom is shaded, and a note under the table explains the scoring for anyone new.

Double-12 is the usual set for Mexican Train. Double-6 is short for a full game and often used for a quick version.

How a round ends and is scored

  1. The round's starting double goes in the hub. Players build their own trains and the shared Mexican train.
  2. The round ends when someone plays their last domino, or when nobody can play and the boneyard is empty.
  3. Each player counts the dots on the dominoes left in their hand. The player who went out scores 0.
  4. Write each count in that round's row. After the last round, add the columns: the lowest total wins.

Choosing a layout

One sheet per page gives large rows that are easy to write in. Two per page fits a double-15 game on half a page, which is handy when you play two games in one evening or want spare sheets in the domino box. Tick Large print for players who prefer bigger numbers. Mexican Train is a favourite in retirement communities and RV parks, and large print with names printed on saves a lot of squinting.

House rules to agree on

  • Whether a double must be covered before anyone can play elsewhere.
  • How many dominoes each player draws at the start, which depends on the number of players.
  • Whether a double blank left in a hand counts as 0 or as a penalty such as 50.

None of these change the sheet, but writing them on the game night line keeps the next game consistent.

Frequently asked questions

How do you score Mexican Train?

When a player plays their last domino, the round ends. Everyone else adds up the dots (pips) on the dominoes left in their hand and writes that number for the round. The player who went out scores 0. After the last round, the lowest total wins.

How many rounds are in Mexican Train?

With a double-12 set, 13 rounds: the first starts with the double 12, the next with the double 11, and so on down to the double blank. A double-9 set has 10 rounds and a double-15 set has 16.

What is the double blank worth?

Usually 0, because it has no dots. Some families count a double blank left in a hand as 50 points as a penalty. Write your rule on the game night line.

How many people can play Mexican Train?

A double-12 set works well for 2 to 8 players, which is what the sheet supports. Larger groups often use a double-15 set.

Can I keep score on my phone?

Yes. Open Keep score on this phone: type each player's pips per round and ScoreNight keeps the totals and shows who is ahead, with the lowest total as the leader.
